Who is Angel Paws?

Angel Paws History

Angel Paws, a pet therapy organization sanctioned by the Delta Society, began working in 2002 with Providence Healthcare Network. Since then, it has grown from three volunteers and six dogs to sixteen volunteers, twenty-two dogs, and one cat. Our volunteers come from all walks of life. They have backgrounds in fields as diverse as medicine, veterinary science, engineering, and finance. Some are retired, but many hold down full-time jobs.

The group is committed to making our little slice of life here in Waco, Texas, a better place through interactions with our

animals.

Our Pet Partners dogs range from seven

pounds all the way up to our newest member, who tops the scales at 191.

Angel Paws is incorporated and registered as a 501(c3) non-profit organization. Providence Health Network has provided extraordinary support and can be largely credited with the success Angel Paws has experienced in recent years. For example, when approached with a new idea, the administration usually just asks what they can do to help.

Our activities include visiting Providence Hospital, St. Catherine Center, DePaul Center, and the Family Abuse Center. We also work in an Animal Assisted Therapy outpatient rehabilitation at Providence Hospital and patient rehabilitation at St. Catherine Center.

In addition to our activities at Providence, Angel Paws visits a number of schools and libraries to better educate children on animal care. We have gone to the McLennan County Juvenile Justice System working with high risk teens trying to give them the opportunity to be with the dogs and learn how their actions impact everything about them. In 2004 Angel Paws developed a one-of-a-kind ballet program that combines ballet and dogs to give children who might otherwise be ignored something to be proud of. We attend health fairs, various organizational meetings, and dog shows to educate people about our organization.

All Angel Paws members have a couple of beliefs in common: a steadfast love of dogs and a belief in the importance of treating all living beings with positive and loving care.

Most of all, we want to make this world a better place, and that better way to do that than with the help of our special partners–our own beloved dogs.

Our Mission
The mission of Angel Paws is to increase the quality of life for individuals during their stay in healthcare facilities. The focus is on the whole person; their physical, cognitive, emotional and spiritual well-being. The animals serve to motivate individuals in their therapy and bridge communication gaps with the medical staff.

Animal Assistant Activities and Therapy Animal-Assisted Activities (AAA) are entertaining, educational, and/or motivating. They are delivered by specially trained professionals, para-professionals, and/or volunteers along with their animals who meet specific criteria. AAA can be shows of entertainment, speaking in school settings, or social visits from room to room in health care settings. It is not necessarily goal-directed, but is very therapeutic in nature.

Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) is goal-directed intervention in which a therapy animal is an integral part of the clinical treatment process. It is directed by a health or human service professional with specialized expertise and within the scope of practice of his or her professional. It is designed to promote improvement in the whole person. AAT is done in the form of one to one, group, or co-treatment settings. Charting is completed by the health or human services professional.
